Early May in Yellowstone National Park. Along the thermal waters of the Firehole River where the grass is greening up, the herds of Bison are calving. The warm ecosystem along the geysers creates a system where early spring forage is available for the cows and the warm temperatures create a nice environment for the calves. At sunrise, the calves are just starting the morning routine of nursing, stretching and rubbing on the cows to get them up for nursing. The calves are left in the care of a few cows while others start grazing. When the sun is finally up and the meadow is all in sunshine, the calves will join their mothers and move off to make the rounds of the day.
